Energy from Biogas

Energy from biogas is a green or renewable energy, and its production reduces greenhouse gas emissions by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The most rapidly developing nation in Europe for biogas production and utilisation is Germany. The German technology and installation/operational service company NAWARO® is very active in this sector and is worth quoting.

NAWARO® was, as stated on its web site, the first company in Germany to develop a business concept for generating energy from biogas on an industrial scale.  They produce energy from biogas on an industrial scale.

Since 2003, the company has produced over 156 million kWh of energy from biogas combustion, to provide heat for the manufacturing process.  Their company/project will produce 30GWh a year of green energy from biogas, reducing imported electricity needs and cutting greenhouse emissions by about 25,000 tonnes a year (12% of our overall target).

Chinese low cost DigesterAnother example is Ontario state, Canada. In Ontario, a means of obtaining value for the energy from biogas systems is to sell electricity or replace existing electricity purchases.

In farms with over 1,000 LSU (live stock units), energy from biogas resulting from gasification of manure is feasible under their local energy price conditions. However, it has been reported that due to the lack of experience and know-how on this subject, progression on implementing biogas energy projects is rather slow.

All these bodies are looking for ways to introduce new processes for squeezing as much energy out of biomass as possible. One established way of doing this is already well known, but not so often implemented and that is the addition of Combined Heat and Power to bio generation projects. By harnessing residual thermal energy from biogas plants substantially higher efficiencies are achieved.

Other renewables sources being developed alongside energy from biogas are geothermal, solar, ocean, and wave systems. Of these, biogas is the only one which can be developed by nations which can be developed everywhere and which will be operable in the worst winter conditions and at when clearly solar power does suffer from difficulties. So many pronounce solar as the renewable energy source to beat all, but without mentioning this small point of daily outage, and when power demand is substantial. Energy from biogas suffers no such problems!

Energy

Energy is the motor of the world economy.

Energy won from biogas is CO2-neutral: the amount of CO2 released during combustion of biogas equals the CO2-consumption of the energy crops during cultivation.

Energy production projects from biogas generated from wastewater treatment plants, agricultural and livestock activities and landfills are currently being implemented.

Energy Consumption Per Capita is the amount of energy, as defined above, consumed on average by each person, expressed in kilograms of oil equivalent (kgoe).
Electricity

In Germany as stated above, the nations has a strong biogas energy policy. An important prerequisite for expanding the use of biogas as a regenerative energy source is the German Renewable Energy Law (EEG), which regulates the sale of biogas-generated electricity to electric grid operating companies.  As we have said above, in contrast to photovoltaic and wind energy, biomass from regional resources has a further important advantage. The advantage is namely that unlike other renewable power sources industrial-scale use of biomass guarantees a high level of reliability in electricity feed-in. This point is very important when power supply security is considered, and appears to be more clearly understood among policy makers in Germany than elsewhere in some national energy policies.
